Step into the timeless world of Jake Xerxes Fussell, a singular voice in contemporary folk music. Hailed by NPR’s Ann Powers as "maybe the leading interpreter of American folk music right now," Fussell’s artistry breathes new life into traditional songs, weaving archival melodies with fresh, evocative arrangements.
A singer, guitarist, and composer based in Durham, NC, Fussell’s intuitive approach to music draws from deep folk traditions, transforming obscure historical tunes into something profoundly resonant. His latest album, When I’m Called (Fat Possum Records, 2024), produced by James Elkington, features contributions from Blake Mills, Ben Whiteley, Joe Westerlund, Joan Shelley, and Robin Holcomb—a testament to his rich, collaborative spirit.
Most recently, Fussell released a stunning rendition of "Close My Eyes", originally composed by the late American visionary Arthur Russell, and composed the score for Rebuilding, a feature film directed by Max Walker-Silvermanthat premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
"Fussell’s music often comes with complex citations; he is a folk singer in the truest sense, collecting ideas and melodies and lyrics from distant and disparate traditions, looking for the things that unite us in our humanity." – The New Yorker
"One of the great magpies of American song, collecting forgotten, tarnished gems with a folklorist’s zeal… his renditions aren’t so much cover versions as composites…" – The Guardian
