65th Anniversary Folk Heritage Series: Dom Flemons
American Roots Folk

Banjo, blues, folk, and fire – GRAMMY winner Dom Flemons, "The American Songster," brings the spirit of American music to Caffè Lena.

A GRAMMY Award winner, four-time GRAMMY nominee, two-time EMMY nominee, and United States Artists Fellow, Dom Flemons is one of America's most celebrated musicians and historians of American roots music. His performances span more than a century of American song, weaving together country, blues, bluegrass, folk, and early Americana traditions with heart, soul, and masterful musicianship.

A founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and an acclaimed solo artist, Flemons is known for his dynamic live shows, deep musical scholarship, and ability to bring the past vividly to life. He is a virtuoso on the banjo, guitar, harmonica, jug, fife, bones, and quills, and his storytelling bridges history, culture, and song in unforgettable ways.

His most recent solo album, Traveling Wildfire (Smithsonian Folkways), earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Folk Album alongside legends like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. His earlier project, Black Cowboys, helped shine a national spotlight on Black contributions to country and Western music.

Flemons has performed at iconic venues like the Grand Ole Opry, the Kennedy Center, and festivals across the world. His collaborations include work with artists such as Tyler Childers, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Yo-Yo Ma, and he has been recognized by major institutions including the Smithsonian, Harvard, and PBS.
